Wooden Boxes and Small Cases

Also called tea caddies, writing slopes.

Typical period: Varies

Dated the same way as furniture — by construction and hardware rather than by style, since box forms were reproduced continuously.

What you are looking at

Small lidded wooden boxes, often veneered, sometimes fitted inside, with brass or steel hinges and a lock.

How to date it

  • Dovetails at the corners: hand-cut irregularity against machine uniformity.
  • Hinge type and screws — hand-made screws have off-centre slots and irregular threads; machine screws from roughly 1850 are consistent.
  • Veneer thickness: hand-sawn veneer before roughly 1830 is thick, over 1 mm; machine-sliced veneer after is much thinner.
  • Lock plates and escutcheons are often replaced and date the repair rather than the box.
  • Interior wear should match the exterior. A pristine interior in a battered box suggests a rebuild.

Spotting a reproduction

  • Modern reproduction tea caddies and writing slopes are made in quantity, particularly in Indian and Chinese workshops.
  • Thin uniform veneer over MDF or plywood is conclusive.
  • Machine-perfect stringing and inlay without any variation indicates modern production.

What it is worth

Common Victorian boxes in poor condition are worth little. Value comes from exotic timbers, fitted interiors, documented makers and original condition including the interior lining.

Confused with

Modern reproductions

Plywood or MDF carcass under the veneer, and machine dovetails or no dovetails at all.
